Mark has promoted multi-year contracts, including the 2011-13 teachers’ contract that followed a breakdown in negotiations. Multiyear contracts reduce uncertainty for employees and can reduce the incentive to search for new jobs.
In 2015 Mark promoted a policy change to encourage multiyear contracts for principals. The policy (adopted 4-0 by the board) allows the superintendent to offer multiyear contracts to principals who perform well. Unfortunately, no principals were offered multiyear contracts this year.
Principals, who are the ones working every day with teachers, students, parents, etc., are the most important administrators in the district. Pay scales that lock central administrators into higher salaries than principals should be revisited.
